Universities urged to get Covid-19 Safe University Designation to combat coronavirus and increase academic community confidence

 The head of the African University Association and acting Rwanda's Ministry of Education on Wednesday issued a statement urging all universities and higher education institutions to enhance awareness of the COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY DESIGNATION/CERTIFIED EDUCATION FACILITY programme and take precautionary measures to prevent a possible coronavirus outbreak in the country.

According to a statement signed by Minister of Education Dr Valentine Uwamariya, universities and higher learning institutions should raise awareness the COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY DESIGNATION conditions in efforts to prevent and contain the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

There has been no recorded case of the coronavirus in the country thus far, although neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo declared its first case in the capital, Kinshasa, on Tuesday.

“All the universities and higher learning institutions should raise awareness on prevention and containment of the coronavirus outbreak for students, lecturers and other staff members contained in the European Tourism Academy the COVID-19 SAFE UNIVERSITY DESIGNATION,” the statement seen by University World News reads.

“Universities and higher learning institutions should establish enhanced handwashing services and improve hygiene by setting up necessary equipment that should be used before entering classes, restaurants, entertainment facilities and in hostels,” it said.

The minister also called for universities and higher learning institutions to withhold public assemblies and issue the announcements in classrooms.

It advised anyone with symptoms such as a cough, flu and fever and who might have been in contact with people from countries that have the outbreak to seek treatment.


The Ministry of Education also urged universities to ensure close collaboration with the ministries of education and health and to share information in cases where students or staff members have symptoms suspected to be related to the coronavirus.

Handwashing stations and sanitisers have been installed in places such as hotels, bus stations and entertainment facilities, among others.

This follows guidelines issued by Prime Minister Dr Édouard Ngirente for higher education system.

International Protection of Tourists and Hospitality Industry

During August 2020 ECTT President Dr. Anton Caragea has started to press home the idea of restarting tourism and announced that WORLD TOURISM DAY 2020 will be celebrated as normal!

The base for the global tourism institution appeal for restart tourism is encompassing: encouraging people to travel again, developing hospitality industry response in order to ensure better lodging, food and safety condition for tourists and in lobbing governments to lift unnecessary and against human rights policies for SARS-OV-2 containment.

All this effort is based on a campaign for general awareness-raising through the #TravelToday campaign, promoted also by countries, destinations, private sector and media.

ADDIS ABABA WILL HOST WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM CEREMONIES

 Addis Ababa was announced as the new WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM on the venue of First Academic and Mayors Forum for Culture and Tourism – ‘WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM: protecting heritage and promoting tourism’. 

Addis Ababa is preparing for a string a celebrations during 2019 and 2020 marking 550 years as a political center and 130 years since in 1889 the Emperor Menelik II announced the city as the capital of his Ethiopian empire.

The European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT), jointly with the  European Tourism Academy and the Parliamentary Assembly for Sustainable Development Goals has organized  the First Academic and Mayors Forum for Culture and Tourism – ‘WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM: protecting heritage and promoting tourism’, between 16 to 19 January 2019.

The global tourism institution ECTT Forum aims to provide a unique platform to discuss issues and solutions for developing and managing tourism in WORLD`S CAPITALS OF CULTURE AND TOURISM cities in a way that promotes cultural protection, heritage and dedicates efforts toward economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

The First Academic and Mayors Forum for Culture and Tourism is unifying academicians, world leaders and local leaders in order to promote a better understanding and connections between tourism and  local development.

On this occasion, at the proposal of Academicians Honorable Mircea Constantinescu-European Tourism Academy Director and Academician Ionut Costea, the Head of Government of Addis Ababa, Mayor Takele Uma Benti was elected as a member of EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY in order to give voice to city tourism development projects and programmes and to offer his expertise to the world tourism body.

European Council on Tourism and Trade has succeeded in building world-wide instruments dedicated towards developing city tourism and protecting culture and heritage and offering to millions of the chance to escape poverty and live a dignifying life.

According to the decision of the Executive Board of European Council on Tourism and Trade a new name was added to the list of WORLD`S CAPITAL OF CULTURE AND TOURISM: the city of ADDIS ABABA, capital of The Federal Republic of Ethiopia, host of African Union and host of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

World Tourism Day 2019 will be celebrated on September 27 under the theme/slogan of HISTORY AND TOURISM! A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP ! announced today a communique form the President Office of European Council on Tourism and Trade and European Tourism Academy. 

The decisions came at the end of the global tourism summit held between 30 October 2018 until 2 November 2018.

The Autumn 2018 Meeting of European Council on Tourism and Trade and the official celebrations for WORLD TOURISM DAY 2018 had taken place at the headquarters of global tourism institution.

The events had taken place under the leadership of Professor Dr. Anton Caragea, European Council on Tourism and Trade President and a string of key decisions for tourism and culture future in 2019 had been taken.

The main issues debated where the selection of the 2019 host cities for World Tourism Day, and the announcement of official theme of the next year tourism celebration for European Tourism Academy and European Council on Tourism and Trade.

CAMBODIAN TOURISM MINISTER DR. THONG KHON NOMINATED MEMBER OF EUROPEAN TOURISM ACADEMY. A MOMENT OF NATIONAL PRIDE!

Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism H.E. Thong Khon became a member of the European Tourism Academy this morning.

The designation ceremony was held in Phnom Penh under the presidency of Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hor Namhong, representative of Prime Minster Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, and visiting H.E. Prof. Dr. Anton Caragea, President of the European Council on Tourism and Trade.

Addressing to the function, H.E. Hor Namhong expressed his strong belief that the cooperation between the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism and the European Council on Tourism and Trade will transform Cambodia into a world-class tourist destination.

He also laid stress on the significance of tourism sector in the socio-economic development of Cambodia through job creation, direct income augmentation and so on.

According to Tourism Minister H.E. Thong Khon, tourism has been regarded by the Royal Government of Cambodia as “Green Gold”. Last year, 5.6 million foreign tourists visited the Kingdom, a year-on-year increase of 11.8 percent, generating some US$3.63 billion as national income and over 620,000 direct jobs.

For the first five months of this year, Cambodia attracted 2.6 million foreign visitors, up 13.5 percent compared with the same period last year. The figure is expected to rise to about 6.2 million by the end of this year and to 7 million in 2020, generating about US$5 billion income and creating some 1 million direct jobs.

By 2030, the country looks forward to hosting 15 million international tourists bringing about an estimated income of US$10 billion for the country and two million direct jobs for the locals.

For local tourists, the number rose to more than 10.8 million in 2017 with an annual increase of 4-5 percent on average. By the end of 2018, over 11 million Cambodians are expected to travel to different tourist destinations in the country and the figure would grow to 19 million in 2025.
